Dr. Julia Yvonne “Taylor” Avery Muse
Crestwood High School
Class of 1966
My Story
In 1966 my career goal was to be a nurse but decided to enroll at Norfolk State University (NSU) as a Business Education student. Those were great years at NSU. Among my many activities, I was a stenographer, amateur model, Miss 4th Battalion, Miss Technology and very active in community service projects. In 1970, I graduated
from NSU and was already employed by Norfolk Public Schools (NPS); that same year I married Ashley D. Avery. From that union we had two boys, Ashley Jr. and Andre. I continued working with the Norfolk School District for 37 1⁄2 years where I retired as a Secondary School Principal. Within my tenure with NPS, I earned a MS Degree in Education and School Supervision from Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauraldale, FL.
I am a member of several professional, civic and community organizations including Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.® and a Life Member of the NAACP. I have been fortunate to receive many outstanding awards including School Bell (7 times); the Martin Luther King Community Service and a Charter Member of Hampton Roads Literacy Partnership. I am a member and Deaconess at Providence UCC, Chesapeake, VA. Although all the teachers at Crestwood were great, my mentor was Mrs. Garrett.
In 2001 I married Ronald E. Muse. Currently, I have three adult children: Ashley and Andre’ Avery and Rhonda Muse Lewis. Four beautiful grandchildren: Jasmine, Alex, Sierra and Antonio who are all doing exceptionally well in school academically and athletically. My hobbies include: arts and crafts, playing the piano and painting.
